Karl Messner

Karl Messner, born in Klagenfurt AUSTRIA immigrated to South Africa in 1971 and has been a dedicated mineral collector since early times although this field has little to do with his current field of work: tool & die making. He is a member of the Mineralogical Society of Johannesburg. Karl specialises in Southern African mineral specimens but also has quite a few specimens of other countries. Especially of Austria as he lived there.

Besides being a very keen rockhound he is also very interested in fishing, spearfishing, plant collecting, palaeontology and hunting. This would explain why his house resembles a living museum. This museum is tolerated by his wife Helga who has a lot of understanding in this respect.

He currently lives in Gerdview, Germiston. His postal address is:

The Private Collection of Karl Messner:

Karl Messner specialises in Southern African mineral specimens but also has quite a few specimens of other countries. His collection of Southern African specimens is one of the largest collections in South Africa, although a large portion of the collection is not in South Africa. It may be possible to view the collection after one has contacted Karl at the address mentioned above.

Here there will be some pictures of Karl's Minerals that appeared in the book "Minerals of South Africa" by Bruce Cairncross and Roger Dixon.
